Conlon's Cavalcade: This Day In DC History- January 8

Today we take a birthday bow before the Queen of the Amazons...Hippolyte. Now any scholar can tell you that this character has her roots as far back as Greek myths, but for our purposes (not to mention my Neal Adams calendar- and nobody argues with Neal) we'll peg her debut as All Star Comics #8 (December, 1941). This is of course the same issue in which her daughter Wonder Woman began her adventures (and dare I say that date also calls to mind Pearl Harbor). There's not much to know about the Queen other than, boy is she confusing. If it is a woman's prerogative to change her mind, than it must go double for an Amazon. From the spelling of her name (often times it is Hippolyta, though not at the time of the calendar), to the color of her hair (blond in the Silver and Bronze Age, black otherwise), she is always in flux. She has been retconned into the Golden Age Wonder Woman of the JSA, and then retconned out of that role. She was killed at the end of Our Worlds At War, but is now alive and well. She is a beacon of peace, who for some reason ordered the Amazons Attack. Even on the Linda Carter TV series she was played by three different actresses (including Cloris Leachman and Carolyn Jones aka. Morticia Addams!!!!!). Yikes!

Next to her, the 10th's birthday boy will be a Snap...
