Let's get this party started with a bang...Roy Lincoln, the Human Bomb, burst on the scene in Police Comics #1 (Aug, 1941). Paul Gustavson's creation shared his debut issue with fellow Freedom Fighter, Phantom Lady. Police was a title from the Quality Comics line. But, Roy Lincoln had a hard time making quality decisions. After the Nazis killed his father, Roy (a scientist) had to find a way from keeping his new explosive formula (27-QRX) out of Axis hands. So, of course he...swallowed it! This gave him the power to explode anything he came into contact with. Naturally, he needed to cover himself up. So, of course he wrapped himself, head to toe, in a suit of...asbestos! All good heros need a sidekick. So, of course Roy chose Hustace Throckmorton, who also had explosive abilities...in his feet!
After DC acquired Quality, the Human Bomb was relocated to the Nazi plagued Earth X. He joined the DC Universe proper in a short lived Freedom Fighters series, but interest in the character fizzled. Outside of a few cameos (most notably in the 90's title Damage), the Bomb faded into obscurity. Finally, in Infinite Crisis, he was beaten to death by Bizzaro.
I feel like I've been tough on Roy. He was pretty cool, and visually he was er, dynamite. And, in the grand DC tradition there was a new Human Bomb (Andy Franklin) introduced just a few months later.
Tomorrow, it's back to reality for a man I don't GENERALy care for...
