This time we are whistling Dixie for...Robert E. Lee. Yeah, for some reason the DC calendar chose to extended a shout out to the Confederate general. Now, maybe it's because I'm a damn Yankee, but I never could get behind General Lee (outside the Duke boys' sweet Dodge Charger, that is). Lee was born in 1807, and graduated second in his class at West Point. By all accounts he was a military genius.
Lee had some opposition to the secession of the South, and did his best afterwards to bring the country together. And, while he considered slavery morally and politicaly evil, he did think blacks were better off here than in Africa. He thought that their painful discipline was necessary for their instruction as a race. He hoped that one day that this would not be the case, but stood by these views. So, I'm sorry if I don't salute.
He showed up in last year's Weird War Tales special that DC published. He also had ties to the Haunted Tank series. Those stories featured the ghost of J.E.B. Stuart, a real life soldier that served under Lee in the Civil War.
On the 21st, we look at Smallville's other favorite son...
