Conlon's Cavalcade: This Day In DC History- January 3

A couple of years ago I came across an old DC calendar for 1976. It has tons of awesome Neal Adams artwork. Since Neal will gladly tell you that Neal doesn't do bad work, I bought it despite being decades out of date. What's really funny is that on each day (well most of them anyway) they list the birthday of one of that era's DC superstars. I thought it would be fun, since we are at the beginning of a new year to keep readers posted on what hero, villain, or supporting character is celebrating a happy B-Day. According to the calendar, no DC character was born on the first two days of January.

However, on January 3 a hero was born. But, this character is far better known for not being alive- Jim Corrigan, The Spectre!

Corrigan first appeared in More Fun Comics #52 (Feb, 1940). He was the creation of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, and Bernard Bailey. After being killed by mobster Gat Benson, the soul of police detective Jim Corrigan was bound to God's Spirit of Vengeance. After fighting evil for decades (both on his own and alongside the Justice Society of America), he was at last allowed to rest in peace in #62 of his 1990s series.

There were no character birthdays on the 4th, so see you on the 5th to raise a glass to my other favorite policeman...

John!
